Asset Management in Turmoil: The End of Mediocrity
The asset management industry is probably facing its greatest upheaval in decades. Partnerships, alliances, and relentless cost pressure are rewriting the rules – and those who believe “business as usual” is an option will disappear.
The End of Benchmark Huggers
Firms that merely track indices – and lag them 80–90% of the time – are on the way out. Mediocrity has no future.
The Hour of the Bold
Small, specialized players with genuine alpha and the courage to embrace tracking error are staring at a historic opportunity. Differentiation beats scale.
Active ETFs on the Rise
The lines between active and passive are blurring – what matters is the ability to balance performance with cost efficiency.
Private Markets as a Mandatory Building Block
Not a panacea for retail, but increasingly indispensable as a complement in retirement solutions.
AI as the Elephant in the Room
The industry knows: tomorrow, machines might not only run investments but negotiate directly with each other. Is the traditional sales role an endangered species?
Partnerships and Access as the New Currency
Today, more than ever, asset managers are forming strategic partnerships with private markets specialists to capture growing investor demand for alternatives. This is not new, but its importance is accelerating. These partnerships give asset managers faster access to high-margin, less correlated asset classes—such as private equity, credit, real estate, and infrastructure—without the cost and time of building internal platforms. At the same time, private markets managers benefit from expanded distribution and operational scale.
Those who control distribution channels hold real power. Even managers with fairly „plain vanilla“ offerings can become attractive partners if they offer access.
Recent examples include:
- Franklin Templeton & Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners / DigitalBridge / Actis
- Capital Group & KKR
- PGIM & Partners Group
- BlackRock & Partners Group
- Vanguard & Wellington with Blackstone
- State Street & Apollo
- Goldman Sachs & T. Rowe Price
- Coller & Barings / Aeris (Structured Finance)
- Aviva & StepStone Group / KKR / Apollo
Commentary: Beyond Products – Culture as the Real Disruption
The asset management industry is in the midst of unprecedented transformation: new products, partnerships, technology, and digital distribution models are reshaping the landscape at breakneck speed. But alongside these structural shifts, we see another, less visible disruption: a cultural one.
Across conversations with clients and candidates, one theme emerges consistently — the erosion of decency and respect in how business is conducted.
- Feedback from clients/investors is weak or missing altogether.
- Transparency is fading, with decisions changing at the last minute.
- Transactional behavior increasingly replaces long-term trust and dialogue.
- The time and effort invested is often disregarded.
This is more than a “soft issue.” It undermines credibility, damages relationships, and creates lasting reputational risk. In an environment already under pressure from cost, competition, and consolidation, losing sight of respect and professionalism is strategically short-sighted.
Our conviction: sustainable success will belong to those who combine strong products and distribution power with a culture of fairness, respect, and long-term partnership. In a world where machines may soon negotiate faster and more reliably than humans, it is precisely these human qualities that will define true differentiation.
